In his fourth year of practice, Christopher K.L. Young was promoted to the Joseph Saveri Law Firm’s partnership in January 2023. He is a second-generation American, the first person in his immediate family to earn an advanced degree, and the only lawyer among his extended family. Since joining the firm in 2019, he has been instrumental to its success, gaining extensive discovery and trial experience, and collaborating with clients. His focuses on antitrust class actions challenging anticompetitive conduct.
Chris played a crucial role on the plaintiffs’ trial team on In re Capacitors Antitrust Litigation (N.D. Cal.) Capacitors are electronic widgets present in nearly every electronic device we use. The plaintiff class were American companies—distributors and manufacturers—that purchased capacitors from 22 Japanese and American capacitors manufacturers. Plaintiffs alleged defendants formed a cartel and conspired to fix, raise, and stabilize prices in the multi-billion-dollar market.
Since 2019, Chris deftly coordinated Capacitors as the firm, as sole Lead Counsel, litigated summary judgment, tried the case in 2020 (before the pandemic caused a mistrial) and again in December 2021. He played critical roles in nearly all aspects of both trials. Plaintiffs reached settlements totaling $165 million with three remaining defendants shortly before a verdict was rendered, bringing total case settlements to $604.55 million, significantly exceeding the case’s $427 million calculated single damages: a competition law rarity. He was also a leader in achieving final approval of a 2020 $232.05 million fourth round of settlements and the $165 million settlements in January 2023.
Chris is intimately involved with other successful high-profile cases via managing discovery, taking depositions, briefing and arguing motions, and achieving settlements. For example, a $335 million settlement was reached in March 2024 in Cung Le v. Zuffa, LLC (D. Nev.). In April 2024, a $10.8 settlement was achieved in Jessica Robinson v. Jackson Hewitt, Inc. and Tax Services of America, Inc. (D. N.J.), in which Chris manages activity and discovery. (Court approval of both settlements is pending.). He is also heavily involved in several groundbreaking, high profile class action cases involving generative artificial intelligence products. These are the first U.S. cases addressing the use or misuse of the intellectual property of creators (software engineers, visual artists, writers, and others) under federal and state statutes.
Chris regularly speaks and writes about legal issues. His expertise has earned praise from Benchmark Litigation, the Legal 500, the American Antitrust Institute, the National Law Journal, the California Daily Journal, Lawdragon, Super Lawyers, and other organizations. He is currently Vice Chair for the American Bar Association Antitrust Section’s Trial Practice Division. He is co-chair of the Education Committee of the Asian American Bar Association of the Greater Bay Area.
While attending law school at UCLA, Chris was an associate editor of the Law Review.
