Biography

Jerry Tice is a trial lawyer with a focus on complex patent infringement litigation. Jerry’s practice involves a diverse range of technologies, including telecommunication systems, wireless networking, GPS technology, display hardware and software, power circuitry, video encoding, computer hardware and software, semiconductor technology, and mechanical arts.

Jerry has substantial experience litigating patent infringement cases in federal district courts throughout the country and before the International Trade Commission (ITC). As a registered patent attorney, Jerry appears often before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) in inter partes review proceedings. He also prosecuted patents before the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO).

Recent matter/case highlights
  • Secure Wi‑Fi LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., No. 24-cv-00047-JRG (E.D. Tex); IPR2024-01366; IPR2024-01367; IPR2024-01368; IPR2024-01369

Secure Wi‑Fi sued Samsung in federal district court for infringing three patents related to methods for increasing security in wireless networks, such as Wi‑Fi networks. Samsung responded by filing four inter partes review petitions against those patents. As lead counsel before the Patent Trial & Appeal Board, Jerry led the Secure Wi‑Fi team in defeating all four IPR proceedings. On the eve of trial in federal court, the Secure Wi‑Fi team secured several pre-trial orders excluding evidence and arguments relied upon by Samsung. The parties subsequently entered into a settlement favorable to Secure Wi‑Fi.

  • Relink US LLC v. Tesla Inc., 3:25-cv-03365 (N.D. Cal.), after transfer from 1:23-cv-01093-DII (W.D. Tex.); IPR2024-00389

Relink, a Texas company founded by inventor Paul Garrity, sued Tesla for infringing a patent related to power flow in a solar-powered grid. Tesla responded by filing an inter partes review petition. Jerry successfully defended the patent before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, which denied institution after finding there was not a reasonable likelihood that Tesla could prove the patent invalid. The patent infringement case remains stayed while the USPTO considers Tesla’s request for reexamination.
