One of the founding partners of the firm, Patrick Ferland has a wide experience in civil and commercial litigation, as well as administrative and public law litigation. He is recognized by his peers as a lawyer with great legal and advocacy skills, capable of analyzing the most complex situations, identifying the crucial legal issues, and developing novel arguments.

Patrick has particular expertise in appeals and judicial review, class actions, international law, recognition of foreign judgments and arbitration awards, proceedings against the Crown, and constitutional law. He has acted for major private corporations and Crown corporations, in addition to acting on behalf of a foreign State and of foreign public entities, and has appeared before all court levels, including the Supreme Court of Canada. Given his experience before appeal tribunals, as well as in the preparation of applications for leave to appeal before the Supreme Court of Canada, his services are often retained directly at the appeal stage to assist the attorneys in charge of the file before the court of first instance or take over and reorient the file.

Patrick was a member of the Canadian delegation during the negotiation and adoption of the international Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Judgments (2019) of The Hague Conference on Private International Law. He also teaches evidence in civil matters at McGill University’s Faculty of Law and is the co-author of the private international law section of the book series edited by the Quebec Bar School, and of the Guide de l’arbitrage, a treatise covering all aspects of Quebec commercial arbitration law. Patrick is a member of the executive committee of the Canadian Bar Association’s International law section.
