Kareena is a litigation partner in LC Lawyers LLP, an independent Hong Kong law firm, and law firm member of the global EY network of professional firms.
Notably, in 2013 Kareena became the first (and at that time, the only) female solicitor in Hong Kong to be granted the right to represent clients in civil matters at all levels of Hong Kong’s judicial system. Formerly a barrister in New Zealand, with substantial experience in civil actions and criminal defence matters, Kareena has a unique advantage in representing and advocating for clients in civil actions, including those involving fraud. She has successfully run appeals and applications, including before the Hong Kong High Court on novel issues, and obtained successful outcomes in arbitrations.
In 2018 Kareena successfully obtained pro bono a landmark ruling from the Hong Kong High Court which has paved the way for claimants, particularly foreign domestic workers, to bring and continue from abroad claims in labour and small claims tribunals (which require claimants to appear in person), through trade union representation and giving evidence via video conferencing facilities. Due to the unprecedented nature of these orders and its potential impact on Hong Kong’s population of over 380,000 foreign domestic workers, the ruling has been hailed as having significantly improved access to justice for underprivileged claimants.
A skilled litigator with three decades of experience, Kareena’s clients span diverse industries, including automotive, charities, energy, financial services, life sciences, mining & metals, software & computer services, and technology. Her broad litigation practice and experience encompasses a variety of areas, including disputes relating to contracts, directors’ and officers’ liability, shareholders’ remedies, investments and joint ventures, insolvency and insurance matters, and asset tracing and recovery actions.
Kareena is recognised in global legal directories with sources describing her as “very experienced and responsive”, having “excellent advocacy skills” and as “a strong and experienced litigator with a very respectable practice”. Kareena is also recognized by Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific from 2018-2020 as a Dispute Resolution Star for her commercial and transactions work in Hong Kong, and named in Benchmark Litigation Asia-Pacific’s inaugural Top 100 Women in Litigation in 2020.
