Thomas O’Dwyer was the lead partner on a case where the firm represented IDA Ireland, the states leading foreign direct investment agency responsible for the Irish economy. The case related to a multi-million euro dispute with a contractor.

During the research period, Stephen McLoughlin was promoted to partner.


Matheson is a well-established Irish law firm with a special focus on insurance disputes, healthcare litigation and professional discipline disputes.

The firm’s commercial litigation and dispute resolution team is supported by 19 partners and over 100 lawyers. Bryan Dunne heads the commercial litigation department. Key names across the firm’s dispute resolution team include Sharon Daly, Nicola Dunleavy and Michael Byrne.

Matheson regularly represent clients in the financial institutions sector in Ireland and internationally. The firm advised Sky Ireland in a statutory appeal against the Commission for Communications Regulation.

The healthcare group at Matheson has three partners and eight lawyers dedicated to its cases and is headed by Rebecca Ryan. Tom Hayes is another key figure in the firm’s healthcare litigation department. The Healthcare Group at Matheson works on a cross-departmental basis and work with members from the firm’s employment, litigation and intellectual property groups. McCann FitzGerlad is a strong Irish firm in the market with strengths in commercial court litigation. Terrence McCrann heads the department and is supported with 24 partners and three consultants and 73 lawyers.

Key figures in the firm include Roddy Bourke, Helen Kilroy, Sean Barton and Karyn Harty. Key sectors for the firm include financial services, commercial and professional services and energy. The firm’s clients include Independent News & Media, Irish Bank Resolution Corporation and Central Bank of Ireland.

The firm acted for Irish Bank Resolution Corporation (IBRC) against EY in a case relating to the refinancing of the Bank’s former Chairman and his loans.

The firm hired Louise Delahunty as consultant to the investigations group. Ciara Ryan was promoted to partner and Brendan Slattery joined the firm as partner from Barry Doyle & Co.
