Garland “Land” Murphy loves finding the right answer for his clients. He has a knack for quickly identifying a dispute’s key questions and then answering those questions efficiently. Land devotes to his clients the same dogged determination and attention to detail that allowed him to graduate as the valedictorian of his law school class and to receive the highest score on the February 2007 Texas bar exam.

Land is dedicated to obtaining the same exceptional results for his clients from pre-suit dispute resolution through trial and to final appeal. And Land has obtained outstanding results for his clients through jury trials, arbitrations, administrative proceedings, and appeals, with substantial experience representing clients in the energy industry and in trade secret and non-compete cases. For example:

Land tried a 19-day zoom trial in he secured a judgment in excess of $130 million for Vitol Americas Corp. against Targa Channelview LLC in a suit concerning Vitol’s right to the return of $129 million in prepayments for services Targa never performed. The Fourteenth Court of Appeals unanimously affirmed the judgment on appeal.

Land prevailed in a jury trial for BPX Operating Company against Crimson Exploration Operating, Inc. in a dispute over Crimson’s non-payment of joint interest billings. The jury’s verdict resulted in a total recovery of $3.3 million for BPX Operating, and Land successfully defended the judgment on appeal.

Land secured a $6.48 million judgment for his client Southbrook Development Corporation against Diversified Site-Work Incorporated and its principal after a jury found defendants were liable for theft of real property and breach of a settlement agreement.

Land has represented lenders in commercial foreclosure proceedings across Texas, has defeated defaulted borrowers’ requests for temporary restraining orders against foreclosure sales, and has defended lenders’ interests and claims in bankruptcy proceedings filed by defaulted borrowers.

Land has represented bankruptcy trustees and assignees in making demand, filing, and recovering on preference claims and fraudulent transfer claims under federal and state law in bankruptcy court adversary proceedings.

Land has defended oil and gas producers in disputes over alleged non-payment or underpayment of royalties brought by mineral owners in Texas.

Land has represented companies in the oil and gas industry in disputes concerning allegations of personal injury, breach of contract, violations of non-competition agreements, and trade secret misappropriation.
