Lionel is a Partner at Tupman & Bloom LLP. His practice focuses on estate litigation and civil litigation matters, including professional liability, breach of trust and administrative litigation with a particular focus on matters involving breaches of fiduciary obligations. Lionel regularly appears before all levels of Courts in Ontario including the Superior Court of Justice, the Divisional Court and the Court of Appeal for Ontario. He is called to the bar in Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and Alberta.
Lionel has experience as counsel in a broad range of litigation matters, including personal injury, medical malpractice, commercial litigation and administrative judicial reviews.
Lionel is a frequent speaker and panelist at Continuing Professional Development seminars for lawyers and other professionals in Ontario and elsewhere. In the past three years, Lionel has spoken at seminars hosted by the Law Society of Ontario, Osgoode Hall Law School, the University of Victoria Law School, the Canadian Bar Association, the Ontario Bar Association, the Bar Association of Prince Edward Island, Osgoode Hall CPD and the Quebec Bar Association. Lionel also chairs many professional development events, and recently served as a co-chair of the Ontario Bar Association’s “Essential Evidence for Estate Litigators” series.
In 2018, Lionel was ranked in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Guide, and was named a “Leading Lawyer to Watch” in the field of Estate and Trust Litigation.
Lionel is listed in the 2021 Canadian Legal Lexpert Guide as a “Leading Lawyer” in Estate and Trust Litigation.
In 2022, Lionel was recognized as a “Lexpert Rising Star: Leading Lawyers Under 40 in Canada”.
Lionel has served as a member of the Ontario Bar Association Trusts and Estates Executive since 2017, and was recently elected President of this group. Lionel also served as a member of the Ontario Bar Association Elder Law Executive in 2017, and served as Vice Chair of this group in 2018. Lionel has also served as a Member-at-Large of the Advocates’ Society Estate and Trust Practice Group Executive and as a Member-at-Large of the Canadian Bar Association Elder Law Executive. He is also currently serving his second term as an elected Toronto Region Councilor for the Ontario Bar Association.
In May 2021, Lionel was appointed to serve as a member of The Advocates’ Society 10+ Standing Committee, as well as The Advocates’ Society Estate and Trust Practice Group Executive.
Lionel is approved to serve as a Coach with the Law Society of Ontario Coach and Advisor Network for lawyers.
Lionel is Past President and Chief Ambassador for the University Club of Toronto.
