“A creative thinker, a wise counselor, a great strategist who’s equally great and rigorous with the details… I would immediately turn to Stephen again—because I trust him.” – Dov Seidman, Founder and Chairman, LRN

Stephen Shackelford, a member of Susman Godfrey’s Executive Committee, has litigated and tried complex, bet-the-company cases in federal and state courts across the US. He has secured recoveries worth hundreds of millions of dollars for plaintiffs and protected defendants from billions of dollars in potential exposure.

Shackelford finished first in his class at Harvard Law School and clerked for Justice Stephen Breyer on the U.S. Supreme Court. Litigation is his specialty—taking on and winning complex, high-stakes cases on both sides of the “v” across many different practice areas: business disputes, torts (including breach of fiduciary duty, securities fraud and other fraud, RICO, tortious interference with contract, and defamation and libel), the False Claims Act, IP, insurance coverage, and class actions.

Prominent Matters:

Shackelford was tapped to serve as co-lead counsel in a groundbreaking defamation lawsuit against Fox News on behalf of Dominion Voting Systems. Dominion accuses Fox of making false claims that Dominion rigged the 2020 Presidential Election – these claims caused a significant decline in Dominion’s business. Shackelford is prosecuting similar defamation claims for Dominion against Rudy Giuliani, Sidney Powell, Mike Lindell, Patrick Byrne, One America News Network and Newsmax TV. He has already secured several wins in these cases, including defeating motions to dismiss by Fox, Newsmax, and all of the individual defendants. The case has received widespread media attention. Shackelford has been featured on CNN and in the Washington Post, Reuters, ABC News, and USA Today, among other leading news outlets

Shackelford won a jury verdict for GE valued at over $100 million in a dispute with the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority over an investment contract involving payments at substantially above-market interest rates. He then successfully argued the verdict on appeal before the Second Circuit. This is one of many wins for GE, where Shackelford previously served as Special Counsel to the General Counsel.

Shackelford secured favorable settlements in a securities fraud case against two sets of defendants on behalf of R2, an investment fund affiliated with the private investment firm Q Investments.

Shackelford was hired months before trial to represent a worldwide travel technology leader in a $100 million insurance coverage dispute. The matter successfully settled on the eve of trial.
