Karine Chênevert is a Partner in Commercial Litigation and Co-Leader of the Class Actions Focus Group. She is recognized for her advocacy skills, winning strategies, and down-to-earth, client-centric approach.
Her practice focuses on class action and general commercial litigation in areas such as competition, consumer protection, shareholder disputes, and privacy.
In addition to teaching in the university certification program in corporate governance offered by the Collège des administrateurs de sociétés, Karine counsels corporate directors and officers on their roles and responsibilities.
She has been named a rising star on several occasions, including by Lexpert and Benchmark, and has been awarded the prestigious Advocatus Emeritus (Ad. E.) title by the Barreau du Québec. Her excellence in General Commercial Litigation has been recognized by Chambers Canada and other rating agencies. She has also been recognized for her professionalism and reputation in Class Actions and in Banking and Financial Institutions.
Karine has led or contributed to major class-action victories for BLG, such as:
- Hazan v. Micron Technology inc., where she represented Samsung’s entities and successfully defeated a competition class action at the authorization stage;
- Pilon c. Banque Amex du Canada regarding over-the-limit spending on credit cards, in which the Court also dismissed an application at the authorization stage, a decision later confirmed on appeal and maintained up to the Supreme Court dismissal of the petition for judicial review;
- Haroch c. Toronto-Dominion Bank, challenging the mortgage prepayment charges levied by The Bank of Nova Scotia and other banks, and dismissed for the second time at the authorization stage.
Methodical and efficient, Karine is often asked to manage cross-jurisdictional files involving stakeholders in other parts of Canada, but also in the U.S. and elsewhere in the world.
