Top 250 Women in Litigation
White collar crime
Alex has built her new firm on the well-recognized success that she has achieved in courtrooms across the country. In 2018, the National Law Journal lauded her decisive trial win in the national litigation concerning blockbuster blood thinner, Xarelto. Law360 named Alex a Trial MVP of the Year for her 2019 victory in a major consumer fraud class action targeting One A Day multivitamins. In 2020, New York Law Journal elevated to its Verdict Hall of Fame the billion-dollar jury award Alex helped secure in a fraud and negligence case against media giant, Vivendi SA.
For these and other successes, Alex was recently inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, which limits its membership to “experienced trial lawyers who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose professional careers have been marked by the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiality.”
Clerkships and Education: Alex has had the privilege of serving as law clerk to two of the country’s top jurists: the Honorable Merrick B. Garland, then a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and the Honorable Stephen G. Breyer, Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Alex attended Bowdoin College, where she graduated summa cum laude, was elected Phi Beta Kappa, and by far most importantly, met her husband Brendan O’Brien. After Bowdoin, Alex attended Stanford Law School, where she served on the Executive Board for the Law Review, loved mixing it up in moot court, and took great pride in winning the school’s prize for Best Oral Advocate.
Community Involvement: Alex serves on the board of D.C.’s Legal Aid Society, the city’s oldest and largest civil legal services organization. She also represents Legal Aid clients in landlord-tenant disputes. In addition, Alex is a board member for LIFT-DC, a national non-profit dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty for families with children through targeted career, education, and financial coaching. Most recently, Alex has begun volunteering with public charter school DC Prep, where she mentors middle school students.
Alex lives in Washington, D.C. with her husband Brendan, their four children, a beloved yellow lab, and two guinea pigs (on whom the jury is still out). In 2016, Brendan and Alex, realizing that their family needed a broader perspective on the world, packed up the kids and spent a year backpacking around the world. It was a life-changing experience for which she will always be grateful.
