Rodney A. Smith is a Calgary‑based partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and the Regional Group Manager for the firm’s Disputes – Commercial and Construction Group in Calgary. His practice focuses on complex commercial litigation and arbitration, with particular strength in construction disputes arising from large‑scale construction and engineering projects. Rodney regularly represents owners, general contractors and subcontractors in matters involving contractual interpretation, negligence, delay claims, construction deficiencies and builders’ liens. He also has experience in energy‑related disputes, commercial real estate disputes and intellectual property litigation, including matters involving trademarks, copyright and confidential information. Rodney has significant trial and appellate experience and has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta, the Courts of King’s Bench in Manitoba and Saskatchewan, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal, the Federal Court and the Federal Court of Appeal, as well as before administrative tribunals and in domestic and international arbitrations.
Rodney was called to the Alberta Bar in 2009 and the Manitoba Bar in 2017. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, The Advocates’ Society, the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada and the Calgary Bar Association. His community involvement includes volunteering with the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association Mentoring Program, BLG Reads to Kids, and the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Southern Alberta.
