Of counsel in the Litigation Department, Claudia Hammerman has extensive experience in handling a broad range of litigation and regulatory matters with particular emphasis defending financial institutions and corporations in complex securities and commercial matters as well as representing financial institutions and other clients before the SEC, the Department of Justice and federal and state regulatory authorities.
Claudia recently represented Credit Suisse and the MIT Corporation in high profile investigations. She has also served as litigation counsel on significant securities and commercial disputes for Citigroup, JPMorgan, Wachovia, Bank of New York Mellon and Bank of America, playing a pivotal role in some of the highest-impact litigations affecting the banking industry over the last two decades.
In her pro bono practice, Claudia also is among the most vocal private practice lawyers nationwide on reproductive rights, fighting relentlessly to protect women’s access to safe abortions. Claudia led a Paul, Weiss team (alongside reproductive rights organizations as co-counsel) representing the last abortion clinic in Mississippi, as well as the last abortion clinic in Missouri to successfully clock gestational age bans until the recent United States Supreme Court’s decision overturning the right to abortion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization. Additionally, Claudia spearheaded a groundbreaking amicus brief in June Medical Services v. Russo, in which she, as counsel of record and lead signatory, enlisted hundreds of lawyers to sign the brief and detail their personal experiences with abortion, drawing national attention to the issue. In the wake of the Dobbs decision, Claudia continues to lead the charge for reproductive justice representing providers, funders and helpers in access states as they navigate the changed landscape.
Claudia has been selected by her peers for The Best Lawyers in America and Super Lawyers and by Benchmark Litigation as a Litigation Star and one of the Top 250 Women in Litigation.
Claudia earned her B.A. from Haverford College, magna cum laude, and her J.D. from Harvard Law School, where she graduated magna cum laude and served on the Harvard Law Review. She has taught several courses in Constitutional Law at Smith College and at Haverford College, and clerked for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
