Jane Metcalf is a Partner in the firm’s Litigation department. Her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, with an emphasis on class action defense, advertising disputes, unfair competition, and data privacy and security. Jane’s diverse client base includes cutting-edge financial technology firms; Fortune 500 companies in the pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and home care industries; financial services firms; and national retailers. While her primary focus is advertising litigation and class action defense, she has a broad range of experience in complex commercial litigation. She has represented clients in civil enforcement proceedings and commercial disputes throughout the United States, and her trial experience includes serving as lead trial counsel to a multinational consumer goods company in a breach of contract dispute with a vendor.

Jane is nationally ranked in Chambers USA in the area of Advertising Litigation, and The Legal 500 has named her a national “Leading Partner” in that area. Clients appreciate Jane’s pragmatism, strategic creativity, and excellent client service; they describe her as "excellent and always quick to respond," and "extremely easy to work with" and have stated that she "comes up with great strategy and is an excellent writer."

Prior to joining Patterson Belknap, Jane clerked for the Hon. Paul G. Gardephe of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York and the Hon. Raymond J. Lohier, Jr. of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

  • Representing InComm, a leader in innovative payment technologies and solutions, in connection with an investigation and litigation brought by the Delaware Attorney General seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for alleged violations of the Delaware False Claims and Reporting Act.
  • Representing the Brita Products Company in a putative consumer class action concerning the advertising and labeling of Brita water filtration products. The suit alleges that certain representations on the labeling and packaging of Brita products are false and misleading.
