Michael J. Garvey is Co-Head of the Firm's Business Litigation Practice and a member of the Firm’s Litigation Department in the New York office. Mike is a general commercial litigator and seasoned crisis manager with over 25 years of experience representing Firm institutional clients across a range of high stakes, complex commercial disputes, including shareholder litigation, antitrust litigation, M&A litigation, cross-border litigation, contract disputes, trademark infringement matters, international arbitrations, bankruptcy litigation, product liability, insurance/reinsurance matters and government and internal investigations. His clients include KKR, Apax, Stonepeak, BC Partners, Integrum, L3Harris, Berkshire Hathaway, Gardaworld, and Amneal Pharmaceuticals.

Mike also has an active pro bono practice. He advises the Natural Resource Defense Council and serves on the Board of Queens Legal Services, one of the largest providers of civil legal services to low-income people in the United States.

Mike is consistently recognized by The Legal 500 U.S. and Euromoney’s Benchmark Litigation as a national and New York “Litigation Star.”

Mike joined Simpson Thacher in 1998, served as a law clerk to the Hon. Albert M. Rosenblatt, a judge on the New York Court of Appeals, from 1999–2001, returned to the Firm in 2001 and became a partner in 2006. He graduated cum laude from the State University of New York at Geneseo in 1995 with a dual degree in English and Music. He graduated cum laude from St. John’s University School of Law in 1998 where he served on Law Review.

  • Obtained dismissal of a buyer’s fraud claims against Integrum and its affiliates that sought more than $100 million in damages in connection with the sale of a large credit card processing business.

  • Representing a former KKR affiliate, PAAMCO Prisma, in a series of long pending Kentucky cases purporting to seek billions of dollars in damages on behalf of the state pension system, including successfully obtaining from the Kentucky Supreme Court the dismissal of one of the cases.

  • Represented various Berkshire Hathaway insurers in winning dismissal of a False Claims Act case premised on alleged Medicare fraud.

  • Representing medical device company, Zynex, Inc., in shareholder litigation and related SEC inquiry.

  • Represented Special Committee of the Board of Directors of General Growth Properties in state and federal litigation arising from its $9.25 billion acquisition by Brookfield Property Partners.
