Mr. Sun is a managing partner at Zhong Lun Law Firm, qualified to practice in People’s Republic of China and the New York State of the US. He graduated from New York University (LL.M), SOAS of University of London (LL.M.) and China University of Political Science and Law (LL.B.).
Mr. Sun is Representative of China to UNCITRAL Working Group II, Member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, Member of ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR, Board Member of Singapore International Mediation Centre (SIMC), Member of the International Advisory Board of Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC), Member of the Supervisory Board of Tashkent International Arbitration Centre (TIAC),Member of the Rule Revision Committee for the Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC) Arbitration Rules 2021, Fellow of Charted Institute of Arbitration (FCIArb). He is also Adjunct Professor at China University of Political Science and Law, Convenor of Construction Dispute Expert Group of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Chief Editor of China Construction Law Review (CCLR), and Secretary-General of The Permanent Forum of China Construction Law (PFCCL).
Mr. Sun is frequently appointed as an arbitrator in international and domestic arbitration cases. He is a Panel Arbitrator of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC), American Arbitration Association-International Centre for Dispute Resolution (AAA-ICDR), Asian International Arbitration Centre (AIAC), Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa (AFSA), Tashkent International Arbitration Centre (TIAC), and Borneo International Centre for Arbitration and Mediation (BICAM). He is also Panel Arbitrator of China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission (CIETAC), Beijing Arbitration Commission (BAC), Shanghai Arbitration Commission (SHAC) and other leading arbitration institutions home and abroad. He is also Fellow of the International Academy of Construction Lawyers (IACL), and is on the List of Practitioner in International Arbitration of Vienna International Arbitral Centre (VIAC).
Mr. Sun has extensive experiences in arbitration, litigation and civil enforcement relating to construction and infrastructure, energy, finance, corporate equity, and real estate. He excels at sorting through intricate facts, quickly grasping key issues and assisting the clients in sketching out comprehensive and effective legal solutions. Mr. Sun has represented clients in many significant and complicated commercial dispute cases, covering jurisdictions such as the U.S., Canada, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria, Singapore, Hong Kong, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Vietnam, Iraq, Iran, Argentina, Peru, Cayman Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, Ghana, Namibia, Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Zambia, etc. His most notable cases include: representing ED&F Man in applying for the recognition and enforcement of an arbitral award rendered by the Sugar Association of London, which is a landmark case in China’s arbitral judicial review regarding public policy; sitting as the emergency arbitrator in the first emergency arbitration procedure in the Chinese Mainland; serving as the presiding dispute review expert in the first case applying the Construction Project Disputes Review Rules of CIETAC; acting as counsel in the first litigation in China between the applicant for independent guarantee and the issuer over wrongful payment under independent guarantee; served as the presiding case-managing attorney for a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE) and successfully revoked an ICC arbitral award before the Singapore High Court and Singapore Court of Appeal, this was a very rare case where a Chinese enterprise successfully withdrew an arbitration award issued by an international authoritative arbitration institution in other jurisdictions.
Drawing on his practical experience, Mr. Sun is also a prolific writer and has published many books and articles in his field of expertise. His major publications include: Arbitration in China—A Practitioner’s Guide (Co-author), published by Wolters Kluwer in 2015; The Belt and Road Initiative: Legal Risks and Opportunities Facing Chinese Engineering Contractors Operating Overseas (Co-author), published by Wolters Kluwer in September 2015; United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation-Legislative Background and Articles Interpretation (Author), published by Law Press in November 2018; Local Characteristics of Arbitration in China and Their Influence on Legislations, published in China Law Review (No.3(2022)) in June 2022; A Commentary on Article 16 of the UNCITRAL Expedited Arbitration Rules, published in Chinese Review of International Law (No.1 (2022)) in January 2022, etc.
For his profound professional expertise and prominent advocating performance, Mr. Sun was listed as Who’s Who Legal 2023 Arbitration “Global Leader”, 2022 Arbitration “National Leader” and 2021 Arbitration “Future Leader”; awarded “2020 ALB China Top 15 Chinese Litigators” by Asian Legal Business; awarded “Litigation Star” by Benchmark Litigation since 2019; and has been recommended by Chambers Global and the Legal 500 since 2020. Mr. Sun was nominated by GAR for “Best Development of 2019” for his role as the first emergency arbitrator in the Chinese Mainland.
