McCarter & English recruits three IP partners

Patent specialist Michael Sartori joined McCarter & English’s IP practice as partner. Prior to joining, Sartori was a partner at Baker Botts. The firm also welcomed James M Smedley and Alex Korona as partners in Philadelphia and Newark respectively. They were previously with Ellenoff Grossman & Schole.

Schulte Roth & Zabel hired two new partners

Schulte Roth & Zabel has hired seasoned litigators Tim Gilman and Chris Gerson as partners in its litigation group. They will be joining the firm’s New York Office. Prior to the move, Gilman and Gerson were both partners at Stroock & Stroock & Lavan.

Barnes & Thornburg expands IP practice with new hires

Barnes & Thornburg has made a series of new hires to expand its IP practice in multiple offices. The hires include Of Counsel Theodore Adams and Linda Kuczma and associates Lauren Hancock, Priya D Sunkara and Mitchell Berry.

Paul Hastings gets a new IP partner

Rudy Kim joined Paul Hastings’ IP litigation practice as a partner. Prior to joining, Kim served as litigation department chair in Morrison & Foerster’s Palo Alto office. Kim's recruitment in California follows the arrival of Douglas Sawyer, who joined from Perkins Coie in March 2023.

Lathrop GPM expands IP practice in Boston and Minneapolis

Lathrop GPM welcomed new IP practitioners in Boston and Minneapolis. Lisa Hillman joined the firm’s Boston office as a partner together with counsel Jennifer Liu and technical specialist Diane Lebo, while counsel Lisbeth C Robinson joined the firm’s Minneapolis office. Before joining, Hillman was a partner at DLA Piper.

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings strengthens with two new partners

Bradley Arant Boult Cummings hired new partners A J Bahou and Blake Bernard as partners in its IP practice in Nashville. Prior to joining, Bahou was a partner at Holland & Knight while Bernard was an attorney at Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis, a firm which became part of Holland & Knight in early 2023.

Karen MacDonald joins Cassels Brock & Blackwell

Karen MacDonald joined Cassels Brock & Blackwell as an IP partner in its Vancouver office. Prior to joining, MacDonald was a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright.

BakerHostetler strengthens IP practice in Los Angeles

BakerHostetler recruited patent litigators Ed Poplawski, Olivia Kim, and Erik J Carlson as partners in its IP practice in Los Angeles. They were previously with Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, where Carlson was an associate.

DLA Piper lands over 20 IP practitioners from Dentons

DLA Piper’s IP teams in San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Seattle offices have expanded with the addition of more than 20 patent practitioners from Dentons. The practitioners include Peter Yim, Christopher Eide, Brian Ho, Randy Omid, Michael Swett, and Parker Kuhl, who joined as partners.

Reed Smith adds Michael Tomasulo as partner

Reed Smith has added patent litigator Michael Tomasulo as a partner in its Los Angeles office. Prior to joining, Tomasulo was a partner at Winston & Strawn.

Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling merge

International law firms Allen & Overy and Shearman & Sterling announced, on May 21, 2023, that they will merge to form A&O Shearman. The merger is subject to approval.

 

Asia-Pacific and Europe

Spruson & Ferguson opens in Manila

Spruson & Ferguson announced in May 2023 that it has opened a new office in Manila, Philippines. This new office means the firm, which is owned by the IPH Group, now operates in seven jurisdictions in the Asia-Pacific region.

Hogan Lovells hires Gertjan Kuipers as partner

Hogan Lovells has hired patent lawyer Gertjan Kuipers as a partner in its IP litigation practice in Amsterdam. Kuipers was previously with De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek.

AWA appoints IP Star as CEO

IP Star Sidsel Hauge took over as the group CEO of AWA in June 2023. Hauge, who is a European patent attorney, was previously the CEO of AWA Denmark and the Group Vice President. AWA's former CEO Magnus Hallin left the firm in 2020.

HLK brings in IP litigator

UK IP firm HLK welcomed Jamie Rowlands as a partner in its legal department in June 2023. Rowlands, who is ranked as an IP Star, joined from Gowling WLG.
