Jury awards $765 million verdict to Motorola in copyright and trade secrets case
A group of Kirkland & Ellis litigators including IP Star Adam Alper successfully represented Motorola Solutions in a copyright and trade secrets suit in the Northern District of Illinois. A jury awarded the client $345.8 million in compensatory damages and $418.8 million in punitive damages, after China-based Hytera was found to have misappropriated IP related to the university’s mobile technology.
Adam Alper is currently ranked as a Patent Star in California. Also on the Kirkland team were IP litigation partners Brandon Brown and Mike De Vries.
CalTech wins $1 billion suit against Apple and Broadcom
A team from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan, including IP Star William Price, secured a $1.1 billion verdict for the California Institute of Technology in a patent dispute against Apple and Broadcom. A Central District of California jury found the companies had infringed three of CalTech’s patents at issue related to error coding technology, according to a Quinn Emanuel press release.
If the damages award is upheld, it will be one of the largest patent infringement verdicts in history in the United States.

Hologic avoids $90 million payment in patent suit
An Arnold & Porter team including IP Stars David Barr, Jennifer Sklenar and Matthew Wolf scored a win in the District Court of Delaware for client Hologic and affiliate Grifols SA. The result, which involves DNA testing technology, will for now deny $90 million in damages sought by opponent bioMérieux.
Sklenar is currently recognized on Managing IP’s Top 250 Women in IP list, a distinction she has held since 2017. Wolf is shortlisted this year for the DC Area Outstanding Litigator of the Year award by Managing IP.
