Bufete Asali is based in Mexico City with two locations – one in the business district of Santa Fe and another in the upscale Polanco district. Recent Benchmark Latin America additions Jorge Asali Harfuch and Luis Asali Harfuch both practice in the areas of civil and commercial litigation. Their respective practices handle a wide range of cases. Jorge Harfuch has recently represented several clients in business-related disputes. Luis Harfuch similarly has handled numerous commercial disputes over the last year. In a case against Oracle, Luis and team represented Grupo Viz and its subsidiary, the largest meat producer in Mexico. The commercial claim against Oracle was valued at $15 million. Luis won in Mexico City’s Court of Appeals, obtaining the client’s claims for damages and the relevant sections of the agreements were annulled in accordance with Mexican law and regulations. In another dispute against a major company, Luis and team prevailed against the insurance giant Grupo Nacional Provincial S.A.B. (“GNP”) in a commercial lawsuit brought on behalf of the Mucharrez family who alleged wrongful termination of the insurance policy. The team achieved a first-of-its-kind interim measure that constrained GNP to cover the family’s medical expenses during trial. The team successfully persuaded the lower court to grant the family over $5 million in punitive and moral damages in addition to enforcing the insurance agreement. The insurer has appealed.
