Cameron Pope has practiced law for nearly 25 years. A native of New Zealand, he studied at the Victoria University of Wellington before coming to the United States and enrolling at the University of Houston. He received his law degree from the University of Houston Law Center in 2001. Mr. Pope began his legal career with a judicial clerkship at the Fourteenth Court of Appeals, after which he joined the litigation group of a large, international law firm. There, he practiced appellate law with the firm as an associate and then as a partner for more than 20 years before joining Hicks Thomas in 2024. He has extensive experience in Employee Benefits and Managed Care, as well as Energy and Toxic Torts. However, he is best known as a skilled appellate attorney, having previously been recognized as both a Litigation and Future Star by Benchmark Litigation.
Mr. Pope has represented a wide range of businesses and other organizations in his practice. For example, he successfully represented a medical school in an appeal of a multi-million-dollar jury verdict in a medical malpractice dispute. He successfully represented a software developer in an appeal before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit of the “death penalty” and other sanctions awarded to the developer in a trade secret misappropriation dispute involving software used in the oil and gas industry. Mr. Pope provided counsel for a river authority in multiple appeals involving flood damage claims by property owners for actions taken during Hurricane Harvey. He was able to secure an appeal for an oil and gas company in a matter before the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in a dispute involving personal injuries sustained on an offshore oil rig. Mr. Pope also successfully represented an oil and gas company in an appeal before the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit involving more than $650 million in alleged damages in a dispute involving an area of mutual interest in the Bakken shale.
Mr. Pope believes strongly in giving back to his local community. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Joy School Endowment Fund. Established in 2018, the fund is used to provide scholarships to children with developmental differences.
