Dispute resolution
Christine Woodin focuses her practice on intellectual property and complex commercial litigation, including patent, antitrust, and breach of contract disputes. Ms. Woodin has managed and developed the strategy for cases of all sizes in a variety of industries – from global licensing disputes to single patent assertions.
Ms. Woodin has recently racked up a series of high-profile victories, including securing a settlement exceeding $300 million for Match Group, the company behind popular dating apps like Tinder, in closely watched antitrust litigation against Google. The lawsuit accused Google of engaging in anticompetitive practices to monopolize the distribution of mobile apps and processing of in-app purchases.
Ms. Woodin also recently represented Ericsson in a worldwide dispute against Apple over fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) terms for a cross-license to the parties’ cellular standard-essential patents. After four days of trial on Ericsson’s claims, the parties announced a global, multi-year license agreement resolving dozens of patent suits pending around the world. The agreement included a $400 million upfront payment plus ongoing royalties to Ericsson.
Additionally, Ms. Woodin secured a complete defense verdict for ClearOne in a Delaware trial against Shure Incorporated involving a design patent for beamforming microphone arrays. The jury found no infringement and decided the patent was invalid. She also obtained a favorable settlement for Amazon in a patent infringement case brought by LightGuide, which alleged over a billion dollars in damages for use of Amazon Robotics’ technology in Amazon’s fulfillment centers.
Her full slate of pending cases includes representing Shopify in a series of suits alleging the e-commerce company failed to protect consumer information amid a major data theft. Ms. Woodin is also defending Medtronic against a case brought by Speyside Medical, which alleges infringement of four patents related to prosthetic heart valves, and is representing TotalEnergies Renewables in a billion-dollar battle with Chinese solar modules supplier Trina Solar.
While attending University of Chicago Law School, Ms. Woodin was a comment editor for the University of Chicago Legal Forum. She earned a B.S. in Applied & Computational Mathematics at California Institute of Technology, where she received the Monticello Research Fellowship.
Ms. Woodin has been recognized among the “Top Intellectual Property Lawyers” in California by the Daily Journal, and among the “Women of Influence: Attorneys” by the Los Angeles Business Journal.
