Isabelle Desharnais is currently co-leader of BLG's Insolvency and Restructuring Group. Her areas of practice include banking law, banking litigation, corporate finance, insolvency, and financial restructuring. She advises both legal and special accounts groups of leading Canadian financial institutions, as well as trustees and accounting firms on complex commercial insolvencies. She also advises institutional lenders, agent in syndicated financing, asset-based lenders and other financial institutions, creditors and committees of creditors concerning their rights in cases of liquidation and insolvency, and she represents debtors under the protection of the courts pursuant to the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act and the CCAA. Isabelle represents clients before all courts in Québec, including the Court of Appeal, as well as before administrative and arbitral tribunals.
Isabelle also practises commercial litigation, specializing in matters of fraud, bills of exchange and other payment instruments.
Isabelle has been a member of the Executive Board of the Executive Committee of the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section of the Québec Division of the Canadian Bar Association (“CBA”) since 2016 and was President of said section since from June 2021 to June 2023, she is also a member of the Executive Board of the ARIL Society, a member of the Insolvency Institute of Canada, and a member of the Liaison Committee of the Superior Court - Commercial Chamber for the District of Montréal. She regularly presents on trends, issues, and precedents in insolvencies and contributes to the education of the insolvency community.
