Future Star

A partner at Hueston Hennigan, Joseph Reiter is a litigator with a track record of securing high-profile wins at trial and on appeal. He handles a broad range of complex litigation, including health care, antitrust, trade secret, class action, False Claims Act, whistleblower retaliation, employment, patent, and tax cases.

In addition to his recognition by Benchmark Litigation, Mr. Reiter is ranked by Chambers in General Commercial Litigation (California). He has been honored as a finalist for “Young Lawyer of the Year” by The American Lawyer, in addition to being named one of the “Trials Rising Stars” by Law360, “Lawyers on the Fast Track” by The Recorder, and “Legal Visionaries” by the Los Angeles Times, among other accolades.

In a case that garnered significant press, Mr. Reiter was on the trial team that obtained a favorable settlement exceeding $300 million in value for Match Group against Google over its illegal monopolization and other anticompetitive behavior in the distribution of mobile apps and processing of in-app purchases.

Mr. Reiter also served as co-lead trial counsel for the country’s largest integrated health care system in a lawsuit in which HCA Healthcare sought hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. After a two-week jury trial, and during the plaintiff’s own case in chief, he obtained a favorable settlement for the firm’s client. He also recently obtained a dismissal with prejudice of all claims for Deloitte Consulting in a trade secret misappropriation case involving fresh food management. And he prevailed on appeal for Amazon in a taxpayer lawsuit seeking to hold Amazon liable for billions of dollars in taxes and penalties.

Other successes include securing a complete victory for Amazon in an arbitration trial that eBay promoted as an international racketeering and fraud conspiracy; winning a $25 million jury verdict against Samsung, finding that Samsung had infringed all claims of all four semiconductor-related patents at issue; obtaining a defense verdict for PricewaterhouseCoopers in a federal whistleblower trial; and serving as trial counsel for Synchrony Bank in a fraudulent inducement action that ended with a favorable settlement for our client during the plaintiffs’ case in chief.

In addition to the 10 trials under his belt, Mr. Reiter has drafted, argued and won significant motions, including obtaining summary judgment for Deloitte in a False Claims Act litigation, and prevailing at summary judgment for the California Institute of Technology in another False Claims Act lawsuit seeking hundreds of millions of dollars for alleged defrauding of the Department of Energy. He also defeated emergency attempts to enjoin the country’s largest integrated health care system’s COVID-19 vaccination policy, defeated Apple’s attempts to infringe Match Group’s First Amendment rights, and secured a victory for BlackBerry against civil extortion and unfair competition claims.
