Having successfully litigated numerous complex cases during his 50 years of practice, Marc Seltzer has long been recognized as one of the country’s leading trial lawyers. Seltzer has been appointed by courts to play leadership roles in many national MDLs involving a wide array of subject matters, including antitrust, securities fraud, automobile product defects cases. Seltzer has secured billions of dollars in verdicts and settlements. Be it trying multi-million dollar cases to verdict, negotiating billions of dollars in settlements in complex antitrust class actions, or facing off against industry titans in business disputes, Seltzer has consistently achieved groundbreaking victories for his clients.

LANDMARK CASES

In re Toyota Motor Corp. Unintended Acceleration Marketing, Sales Practices, and Products Liability Litigation, where Seltzer was appointed to serve as one of the co-lead counsel for the economic loss class action plaintiffs. After three years of hard-fought litigation, an historic settlement was reached valued $1.6 billion.

In re Automotive Parts Antitrust Litigation, where Seltzer is leading Susman Godfrey’s efforts as co-lead counsel for the end-payor class plaintiffs in Detroit federal court. The Department of Justice has called the cartels that are the subject of this litigation the largest group of price-fixing conspiracies ever uncovered. The cases were settled for more than $1.2 billion dollars which is believed to be the largest recovery ever achieved on behalf of indirect purchasers in price-fixing case.

In re: Libor-based Financial Instruments Antitrust Litigation, where Seltzer serves as a senior member of the Susman Godfrey team representing the direct purchaser class, which was certified by the Court in 2018–the only one of several proposed classes to receive certification– in a consolidated antitrust proceeding arising out of the LIBOR-rate fixing scandal. The litigation has thus far resulted in recoveries for the class of $781 million.

Moehrl, et al., v. National Association of Realtor, et al. where, serving as co-lead counsel to the class, Seltzer helped achieve landmark settlements on behalf of a nationwide class of home sellers against the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and numerous real estate brokers and multiple listing services that will resolve claims in four antitrust class actions against NAR and these other defendants. The settlements provide for groundbreaking real estate industry practice changes that have been the subject of national media attention and payments for the class that now total approximately $1 billion.

In re: Allergan Inc. Proxy Violation Derivatives Litigation, where Seltzer served as co-lead counsel for a class of derivative securities investors who alleged that Valeant Pharmaceuticals International, Inc. committed insider trading. The class recovered $40 million , which is believed to be the largest recovery ever obtained on behalf of derivative securities investors in an insider trading case.

COMMITMENT TO THE LEGAL COMMUNITY

Seltzer has dedicated much of his career to improving the legal system through his involvement in numerous civic and legal professional organizations. He served as President of the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles and President of the Ninth Judicial Circuit Historical Society. He is a member of the Boards of Directors of the National Equal Justice Library, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Friends of the Los County Law Library and the American Friends of the Hebrew University, among others.
