MahWengKwai & Associates was founded over three decades ago by former appellate court judge, and current firm consultant, Mah Weng Kwai. The 20-lawyer strong firm has an active disputes practice in the areas of commercial and transactions, construction and real estate, labour and employment, and white-collar crime.
The main disputes contacts are managing partner Raymond Mah, who specialises in corporate and civil litigation, appeals and arbitration, and partners Chong Chieh Gan and Christine Toh.
The firm is currently representing Iskandar Waterfront, a subsidiary of Iskandar Waterfront Holdings and the owner of a vast landbank spanning 4,300 acres in Malaysia. This representation involves challenging the compensation awarded by the land administrator and seeking an additional compensation of RM709 million ($148 million). One of the key challenges in this matter is valuing the underwater land, as there are limited comparable sales for such properties. Consequently, the High Court must exercise caution in determining the market value and the appropriate amount of compensation, relying on a suitable comparable that adheres to the provisions outlined in the Land Acquisition Act of 1960.
Clients the firm recently worked with include Jaya One Management Corporation, Metropolitan Square, Pristine Power and Sime Darby Brunsfield Holding.
In May 2023, the firm hired Choo Mun Wei from Mun Wei & Co as a partner.
