Yuen Law has a broad disputes offering that covers complex commercial cases in the courts, pre-litigation work including negotiations, mediation and private settlements. Its experience spans shareholder, employment, construction, and property disputes, debt recovery, insolvency, defamation, medical negligence, personal injury and motor accident, and criminal matters. Many of the team’s clients are SMEs and high-net-worth business owners, notably in the consumer goods and services, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, and technology sectors. Last year, the commercial disputes team acted in more than 120 contentious matters and its leadership grew three-fold.
The key contacts for the commercial dispute resolution group are directors Amos Cai and Denise Teo, and associate director Lim Yun Heng. Last year, the team welcomed Teo from Niru & Co and Lim from KSCGP Juris. Teo is experienced in civil and commercial litigation, with her strengths extending to criminal defence and forensic investigations.
The firm also features a robust and highly specialised family practice group that excels in a broad array of contentious family and matrimonial matters. This practice is led by director Fung Peen Lim. The group’s primary areas of expertise encompass divorce, annulments, disputes concerning maintenance and custody, nuptial and separation agreements, as well as the variation and enforcement of court orders. The team is also well versed in offering guidance on domestic violence cases, adoption, contested probate, matters relating to the Vulnerable Persons Act, and cross-border disputes involving jurisdictional and forum issues, relocation, and child abduction. Each year, the team handles about 50 contentious family matters, most of which are divorce cases, often involving highly complex issues related to maintenance and division of matrimonial assets.
In one commercial highlight, Cai led a team for claimant Duke Bakery against three defendants for claims of breach of directors’ duties. In another contract battle, the team was engaged by EON Reality for its defence against a claim made by an ex-employee for breach of contract for outstanding commissions and balance salary due and in the counterclaim against the plaintiff for breaching its duty of care owed to the company.
