As head of the Insurance Recovery Group at Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney—the women-owned litigation boutique she co-founded nearly 30 years ago—Dorothea W. Regal has obtained hundreds of millions of dollars for corporate policyholders from insurers. She has extensive litigation and arbitration experience, in the U.S. and internationally. She has negotiated scores of complex settlement agreements resolving coverage disputes for policyholders. She is frequently sought out by corporate policyholders to advise and represent them in complex and valuable insurance coverage disputes. In the courtroom, Dorothea has contributed to cutting-edge legal developments in insurance law, prevailing for commercial and industrial policyholders in connection with insurance coverage for environmental, asbestos, products and directors & officers liability claims, property insurance, and business interruption coverage. As just one example, she and her team won a groundbreaking ruling for Syngenta in a $170 million insurance coverage dispute over product liability claims involving the company’s herbicide, and secured a precedential decision from the Delaware Supreme Court upholding the trial court’s two summary judgment rulings in favor of Syngenta.

Dorothea has been named the Insurance and Reinsurance Lawyer of the Year by Euromoney; a Distinguished Leader by the New York Law Journal; a Notable Diverse Leader in Law and a Notable Woman Business Owner by Crain’s New York Business; and an Elite Boutique Trailblazer by The National Law Journal. She has also been recognized as a leading insurance coverage lawyer by Chambers USA, a top litigator by Benchmark Litigation since 2018, and a New York Metro Super Lawyer for Insurance Coverage since 2014.

Dorothea is a Fellow of the American College of Coverage Counsel, the distinguished invitation-only association representing the interests of policyholders and insurers in disputes arising out of insurance policies. She presented at ACCC’s 2023 Annual Meeting on “Getting to Yes-Negotiating Settlement of Coverage for Longtail Claims.”

Dorothea currently serves as a co-chair of the Business Interruption Insurance Subcommittee of the ABA’s Insurance Coverage Litigation Committee. She is also a member of the Women’s Leadership Circle of Brooklyn Law School and the ABA’s Women in Insurance Network. Before co-founding Hoguet Newman Regal & Kenney in 1996, Dorothea was a corporate and litigation associate at White & Case LLP.
She is admitted to practice in New York and is regularly admitted pro hac vice to represent clients in courts in other jurisdictions.
