Hugh has more than 15 years’ experience in dedicated arbitration counsel work. He specializes in international and domestic commercial, investment, and construction arbitrations in a range of industry sectors, including telecommunications, mining, construction, insurance, logistics, IT and real property, as well as under ad hoc and institutional rules including the ICC, LCIA, UNCITRAL, ICDR, BCICAC, DIAC and ADRIC. Hugh also has experience acting for athletes and sports organizations in arbitrations and disputes involving doping allegations, governance issues, and team selection.


In addition to his counsel work, Hugh is an adjunct professor of international commercial arbitration and has acted as a sole arbitrator in real property and procurement disputes. He is a member of the Canadian Olympic Committee as an Olympic Supporter, the Canada representative on the ICC Task Force for “Addressing Issues of Corruption in International Arbitration”, as well as a member of the ICC Commission. Hugh is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and co-authored the Guide to the PCA Arbitration Rules, published by Oxford University Press.


In addition to several industry awards, Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration named Hugh one of ten “Most Highly Regarded” partners under 45 in the Americas. In 2022, Hugh’s work, dedication, and pro bono efforts, which supported evacuations from Afghanistan, earned both him and the firm the Pro Bono Initiative of the Year award from the Canadian Law Awards.
