Julia K. Lockhart is a talented trial, appellate and research lawyer who carries on a general administrative and commercial litigation practice, focussing on complex commercial disputes and challenging administrative law issues. Julia has been a partner at Nathanson, Schachter & Thompson LLP since 2020 and she demonstrates excellence and precision in her work as an advocate, as well as leadership and compassion in her work generally. Julia regularly advises the Law Society of British Columbia, and has experience before all levels of court, including the Supreme Court of Canada.
Together with Irwin Nathanson, K.C., Julia appeared before the SCC, which found in favour of NST’s client, Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District (now Metro Vancouver) in a landmark case on the good faith limit on the exercise of contractual discretions: Wastech Services Ltd. v. Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District. Julia recently acted for a coalition of municipal governments seeking to preserve aspects of the regulatory power in the aggregate extraction industry in OK Industries Ltd v District of Highlands, 2022 BCCA 12. In Kepis & Pobe Financial Group Inc. v. Timis Corporation, Julia acted as counsel for Kepis & Pobe and successfully obtained a Mareva injunction in respect of a claim for a contractual success fee.
In 2023, Julia was selected as the inaugural winner of the BC Women Lawyers Forum Rising Star Award in 2023. This award recognizes “the accomplishments of a woman lawyer who has achieved tremendous professional success over the course of ten years of practice or less, and who has contributed to improving the legal community in British Columbia as a whole.”
In addition to her experience before the courts, Julia is an active volunteer with Access Pro Bono, and has been the co-author of the Evidence chapter in the CLE Annual Review for from 2016 to present. She on the board of the Association des juristes d’expression française de la Colombie-Britannique, the non-profit which fosters access to justice in French in British Columbia, acts as an advocacy advisor for the Supreme Court Advocacy Institute, and coaches the UBC Law Laskin Moot.
